At Saint Kentigern we inspire young minds to discover the joys of food technology in our specialist food technology classrooms. From ages 5 to 13, our students explore the world of culinary arts, fostering creativity, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation and ability to prepare nutritious and delicious food.

We believe that introducing girls to food technology at a young age is crucial for their holistic development. Our junior school curriculum, designed for girls aged 5 to 7, focuses on the basics of healthy eating and simple, fun recipes. Through hands-on activities in their classrooms, our young students learn about different ingredients and the importance of balanced nutrition. This early exposure helps them build a solid foundation and ignites a passion for cooking that they can carry with them throughout their lives.

As our students progress to middle school, aged 8 to 10, they engage in a project-based approach to food technology. Preparation of foods and dishes is linked into the classroom curriculum through the STEAM programme (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) which allows girls to work in teams, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Middle school students explore and experiment with food in our specialist kitchen fortnightly, encouraging healthy eating habits and developing understanding of food safety and hygiene. They also develop essential life skills such as time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking, all while having fun and creating delicious dishes.

For our senior school girls, aged 11 to 13, the food technology programme becomes even more immersive and challenging. At this stage, students delve deeper into the intricacies of food technology, hygiene and safety. In our specialist building, equipped with modern kitchen facilities, they learn more advanced cooking techniques and explore various dishes from around the world.

Our senior girls learn about the science behind cooking, understanding how different ingredients interact and how to manipulate them to achieve desired results. They are encouraged to adapt and tweak recipes according to nutrition, allergen needs or personal preference and to share their dishes and knowledge with their peers, teachers and whanau. Our specialist building provides an ideal environment for experimentation and innovation, allowing students to push their culinary boundaries and discover their unique culinary styles. All senior students leave Saint Kentigern Girls’ School with the ability to independently cook and prepare a variety of meals for themselves and their families.

We are proud of our comprehensive food technology program that caters to all age groups. Our specialist building is not just a kitchen; it is a vibrant learning hub where girls can explore their creativity and develop a lifelong love for food. Our dedicated

teachers are passionate about teaching and mentoring, ensuring that each student receives personalised guidance and support. They inspire girls to be curious, confident, and adventurous in their culinary endeavours.

In addition to the practical skills they acquire, our food technology program emphasises the importance of sustainability and ethical food practices. Students learn about the impact of food production on the environment and are encouraged to make mindful choices, such as using free range ingredients and minimising food waste. This holistic approach helps shape responsible, environmentally conscious individuals who appreciate the broader implications of their food choices.

We are committed to providing an exceptional education that goes beyond traditional academics. Our food technology program is a testament to our dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the challenges of the future.
