Lessons Beyond the Page with Author Graci Kim

Familiar faces from the pages of much-loved books filled the Girls’ School for Book Character Dress Up Day, with a special visit from award-winning, New York Times bestselling author Graci Kim. Sharing the story of her own journey to becoming an author, Graci spoke to students about setbacks, persistence and being willing to change direction along the way. 

A Korean Kiwi, Graci is the author of the Gifted Clans trilogy and Slinger series, with her stories drawing inspiration from Korean mythology and culture. Graci recently won the 2026 Wright Family Foundation Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction for her book Dreamslinger. Before becoming an author, her varied career included working as a diplomat, hosting a cooking show and running a business that transformed children’s drawings into cuddly toys. 

Drawing on these experiences, Graci spoke openly about being different, the obstacles and failures she encountered, and the many career pivots that eventually led her to writing. She encouraged the girls to keep trying when things did not work out, to be receptive to feedback and to be unafraid of changing direction. 

Animated and engaging throughout her sessions, Graci found plenty of willing participants among students who had embraced the occasion in an impressive variety of costumes, including characters from the worlds of Dr Seuss and Harry Potter. Students joined in, asked questions and heard first-hand about the experiences that shaped her journey.  

The literary spirit extended to the teaching staff, who collectively embraced one particularly recognisable character. With red-and-white stripes appearing throughout the school as staff dressed as Wally, the usually elusive figure was considerably easier to spot than usual. 

Following the sessions, students had the opportunity to have their books personally signed by Graci, providing a fitting end to a day that celebrated reading, storytelling and the people behind the books they enjoy.
