At Kentigern Boys' School, we encourage boys to explore the fascinating world of textiles and soft materials. In our specialist building's dedicated classroom, students learn sewing, pattern making, fabric types, and stitching styles, cultivating creativity and technical skills. We believe we are shaping the designers, craftsmen, and innovators of tomorrow by blending tradition with innovation, where every stitch tells a story.

In our junior school program, boys aged 5 to 7 are introduced to the basics of sewing and fabric work. They begin with simple projects, learning to handle different fabric types—both synthetic and organic. Through guided instruction, they master fundamental skills such as hand sewing, basic machine sewing, and understanding simple patterns. This early exposure to soft materials technology ignites their imagination and lays the groundwork for more complex techniques.

As boys progress to middle school, aged 8 to 10, they delve deeper into the intricacies of soft materials. Our specialist classroom is equipped with advanced tools and machines, allowing students to explore overlocking, intricate stitching styles, and detailed pattern making. They engage in projects that challenge their creativity and precision, such as designing and creating their own clothing or accessories. This hands-on approach not only enhances their technical skills but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride in their creations.

In senior school, boys aged 11 to 13 tackle more sophisticated projects that require advanced sewing techniques and a thorough understanding of fabric properties. They learn to cut and assemble complex patterns, work with a variety of fabrics, and experiment with different stitching styles. Our specialist building provides an inspiring environment where students can innovate and refine their skills. They develop a keen eye for detail, an understanding of fashion design principles, and the ability to bring their creative visions to life.

At Satin Kentigern Boys' School, our soft materials program is designed to nurture each student’s potential. Our specialist classroom is a dynamic space where boys can explore, experiment, and excel in the art of sewing and fabric work. Our dedicated teachers provide personalised guidance, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive. Beyond technical proficiency, our soft materials program emphasises the importance of sustainability and ethical practices in fashion and textiles. Students learn about the environmental impact of different fabrics and are encouraged to make mindful choices, such as using organic materials and minimising waste. They explore ways to repurpose and recycle fabrics, fostering a sense of responsibility and creativity in addressing environmental challenges. This holistic approach ensures that our students are not only skilled artisans but also conscious consumers and innovators in the world of fashion and textiles.

Our commitment to comprehensive education is reflected in our soft materials program. We believe that teaching boys the art of sewing and fabric work is more than just imparting a skill—it’s about inspiring a passion, nurturing creativity, and building a foundation for lifelong learning. Our program equips students with valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom, preparing them for future endeavours in any field they choose to pursue.
