College students outstanding showing at World Scholar’s Cup

Following the success of our three College teams at the World Scholar’s Cup Regional competition, which was held in Auckland in August, all nine students were invited to compete in the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round, which was held in Auckland at the end of September.

Bella Chen, Ruby Ma, Jayen Long, Kai Wang, Vincent Cheng, Kobain Birchall, Matthew Stubbs and Karol Zhang made up three teams which competed in four academic components – the Scholar's Bowl, Collaborative Writing, Scholar's Challenge, and Team Debate.

Well prepared from months of study and a regional round under their belt, our students entered this year’s competition, themed ‘Reimaging the Present,’ with confidence. 

This attitude played in their favour, as our teams walked away with countless medals. Year 9 student Bella Chen had a particularly outstanding performance in the Debating Championships resulting in a second place finish in the Junior Division.

Karol Zhang recounts the experience enriching not only her academic skills, but also relationships with other like-minded individuals.

“I found that even though we were only together for a few days, the community was really close-knit. Forming new friendships to receiving invitations to the Tournament of Champions, World Scholar’s Cup has been extremely fun, whilst still challenging our academic skills.”

“Through more relaxed, non-competitive events such as the Scholar's Show, World Fair, and Scavenge, we were given the chance to showcase a more light-hearted side of ourselves.”

Based on their performance, the groups have received a bid for the Tournament of Champions held at Yale University this coming November. Congratulations to all our students for their efforts.
