In Memoriam: Peter Nelson (1947 – 2024)

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of our beloved student #20, Peter Nelson, on 11 April 2024.  Peter will be remembered for his remarkable dedication to Saint Kentigern Boys’ School, his tireless efforts in nurturing the bond among Old Boys, and his tenacious support for generations of boys through countless engagements and a constant presence at key events and activities six decades beyond his graduation.

Peter was one of four honourees inducted into Te Pou o te Ripeka, the Saint Kentigern Place of Honour on the Shore Road Campus in September 2023, acknowledging his incredible contribution to our schools over the years.

Peter began actively engaging the Old Boys’ community following the encouragement of the inaugural Chairman Warwick Macky and then Trust Board member Rosemary Harris. He became the lynchpin that brought together past and present students, creating a connection that binds generations.

Under the guidance of past Boys’ School Principal Geoff Burgess, Peter’s contribution deepened as he worked closely with the then Development Office to organise various functions including lunches, dinners, and golf days for Old Boys. Recognising the need to expand and strengthen the network of his alma mater, Peter helped re-establish connections with 2000 alumni, bringing them back into the fold of the community.

In fundraising for the school, Peter saw the potential of a dedicated foundation as a vehicle for donors to channel their contributions. His foresight paved the way for the establishment of the Roselle Foundation which continues to support and enrich the schools’ development today.

A familiar face to many in the community, Peter’s involvement in the day-to-day life of the school further strengthened when Peter Cassie came on board as Principal over 12 years ago. Among his many involvements, Peter served as the manager of the 1st XI and 1st XV sports teams, regularly organised barbecues for Old Boys and current students, participated in various Boys’ School events including prize giving ceremonies, sports matches and alumni reunions and took time to speak to staff about developing a strong school culture.

As an Old Boy of both the Boys’ School and College, Peter understood the importance of engagements and relationships, maintaining a meaningful connection by personally writing annually to the Head Boy on his appointment, and to the cricket and rugby teams to celebrate their selection. He provided counsel to staff members where appropriate and maintained a strong rapport with many Old Boys, offering necessary support when needed.

Over the years, Peter has helped foster a sense of belonging and bridged generations with a shared purpose. Peter’s warmth made him someone whom students, staff and fellow Old Boys could rely on and turn to for guidance and support. His absence leaves a void in our hearts.

We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Ali, daughters Georgie and Livi, and son-in-law Rory, for their loss.

A service in memory of Peter will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell on Monday, 22 April 2024 at 10am.
