Rick Liu places third in NZ Economics Competition
On 19 June, eighteen Economics students from Years 11 to 13 participated in the University of Auckland New Zealand Economics Competition held online.
The competition began in 1997, and since then it has expanded in size and reputation, becoming the biggest and most prestigious national competition of its kind for secondary students. Its fundamental aim is to promote the study of Economics.
Over 80% of our participants placed in the top half of the competition, with four students ranking in the Top 10% of participants nationwide and being awarded High Distinction. Rick Liu came third overall in the Competition. The other students in the Top 10% were Kaiyue (Alan) Chen, Mia Li, and Steven Li. They were invited to attend the Awards Evening in October to receive their prizes and recognition.
In 2023, nearly 2000 students from around fifty schools throughout New Zealand entered the competition. The fifty-minute examination tested classroom theory and general knowledge of current economic issues.
The NZ Economics Competition is sponsored by the University of Auckland Business School, the Treasury, and the Kelliher Economics Foundation. The Kelliher Economics Foundation was established in 1964 to encourage secondary school students to pursue tertiary studies in Economics.
